Getting Healthy – Where to Begin
Getting Healthy and Where to Begin…that’s the topic of the day. A self evaluation is the best place to start. Let me explain…
Eating well is NOT something I’ve done my whole life. If you know me, you know I grew up loathing veggies and eating tons of fast foods and everything I cooked at home was fried or came from a box.
I ate out of convenience and for taste, little did I know I had become literally ADDICTED to processed, chemically laden foods that were not only packing on the pounds no matter how active my life was, it was also making me CLINICALLY DEPRESSED.
After and exhausting 4 day crying spell, a visit to my family doctor who happens to be a D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic medicine) changed my life. My life was great for all intents and purposes so I couldn’t understand why I was so unhappy. I mean I was LITERALLY BAWLING my eyes out for DAYS!
My doctor asked me 3 questions.
#1. What kind of exercise was I doing?
#2. What did my diet look like on a daily basis?
#3. What did I do for ME? Was I taking TIME to do something for ME daily or weekly?
My answers went something like this…
#1. I wasn’t. I was too busy.
#2. Fast food, pizza, fried foods, Hamburger Helper, no veggies, lots of sweets.
#3. No. I didn’t have time to do anything I wanted. I was too busy running a business, taking care of my home, husband and running my kids to wrestling tournaments and school functions.
WOW! Just hearing myself answer those questions hit me like a bullet right between the eyes. I KNEW I had to make a change and my doctor reenforced what I instantly knew. To Dr. Doyle, I will forever be thankful for her being REAL with me and not simply pushing an antidepressant on me.
But where do you BEGIN when you are doing EVERYTHING WRONG???? You EDUCATE yourself and you begin INVESTING in yourself. Invest your time and your money in your body, your mind and your SOUL!
I started researching how to eat better, I started looking at what my “healthy” friends were eating and watching what they were doing. I copied them. It wasn’t easy at first. I spent money I couldn’t afford on a program called P90X that I bought from an infomercial and I bought the The Eat-Clean Diet cookbooks to learn how to prepare healthier meals for my family and myself. Shortly after, I added Shakeology into my daily ritual too. I committed to getting up an hour earlier and working out every morning before my family got up. That became my ME TIME, the thing I did for myself.
Over the years my routine and habits have changed gradually and for the better. I haven’t had to go to the Doctor for so much as a cold or sinus infection in years, and I attribute that to the investments I’ve made in my health.
Daily I started to come out of the fog of depression I was in little by little. I hurt all over the first couple of weeks and I couldn’t do a full workout without stopping to take breaks for the first few weeks but I progressed. I started surrounding myself with positive people that encouraged me to keep up the good work through challenge groups on Facebook and I never backed down from a new challenge. I got comfortable getting UNcomfortable and it paid off over time. I lost 20 lbs, then put about 10 back on over time in muscle that I love that makes me look toned and FEEL stronger than ever. I no longer focus on the numbers on the scale but more on how I FEEL and if the foods I am eating and how the time I am spending is SERVING ME or not.
Watching documentaries on Netflix is one of the ways I “stay in the game” with my nutrition. America certainly doesn’t make it easy to make good health choices but it’s entirely possible with education and a desire to want to be better.
Today I follow the Cleanse, Balance & Build philosophy for my health. I regularly Cleanse my body of the toxins brought on my stress, foods and the environment, then I Balance my PH and hormones daily with a healthy shot of GoYin and I Build my body back up with a daily dose of potent nutrition with Daily Build. You can read more about that at www.lyndasuttles.com/cleanse-balance-build.
As far as exercise goes, you can start ANYWHERE. Go for daily walks, set a routine of getting up and moving more everyday within your abilities. Try at home workout programs like I did or join a gym. Group fitnesses classes are fun, is a great way to meet new friends with similar lifestyle goals and can be highly motivating to help you stick to your goals.
I hope to INSPIRE healthy changes among those who need and want it. I was one of those people and WISH someone had inspired me BEFORE depression got a hold of me and rocked my world. Fortunately I never had more than about 25 lbs to lose and I attribute that to how busy and active my life was before I started my journey.
