C’mon, is stretching really that important? I mean we all know we should do it, but it is so boring. So why should we stretch? What are the benefits to adding stretching to your exercise routine?
Well first of all stretching protects you from muscular pulls. If you have ever pulled a muscle you will know that is something that you want to avoid at all costs. Stretching allows you to take some time to warm the muscle up and get it loose before you attack it with your workout. Not only does stretching help increase your range of motion but it also helps your flexibility. Now, depending on your age, these things may not seem like that big of a deal, but if you avoid stretching now you may one day look back and wish you hadn’t.
Not only that, but failure to stretch before your workout can lead to decreased performance. If skipping stretching before working out caused you to have a less effective workout, don’t you think that will add up over time. Or to put it another way, if stretching before your workout makes it more productive, how much more progress will you make with more productive workouts? I know stretching isn’t fun, but it is a no brainer.
So take a few minutes before your workout. Do a little light cardio to get your heart rate going and warm up the muscles do. Do some light stretching, hold each stretch for 30 to 40 seconds and do not bounce. This extra 10 mins before you workout might not seem like it’s worth it, but over time the benefits will become obvious. If you manage to avoid even one injury over the course of a year it will be more than worth it don’t you think?
