I am sure you have heard that you need to eat 6 small meals a day to lose weight. The theory being that it boosts the metabolism. If you go too long without eating that your body will go into “starvation mode” and will burn muscle instead of fat. Truth be told, I used to believe this as well. However, the fact of the matter is that is simply isn’t true.
So why do we keep hearing it? Well one of the reasons is that it sounds like it makes sense. Another being that there are many people that has used this style of eating to lose weight. However, what people tend to miss is that these people usually went from eating bad food to clean food; so their meal frequency was irrelevant. Just the fact that they cleaned up their diet was enough.
Besides that, think about the way people used to eat just 100 years ago. They would go long periods of time without eating, and they weren’t in “starvation mode”. Many of the pioneers that settled this country were in what many these days would consider really good shape. They were lean and muscular out of necessity. And since there was no McDonald’s Drive Thru or Dollar Menu for them to gorge themselves on they often times go without food for hours or days.
Now obviously I am not suggesting you starve yourself. We all know that is not a good idea. However, I will say that being hungry is “ok”. It doesn’t signal that the world is coming to an end and that you have killed your metabolism. Just remember first thing in the morning your body is burning fat. It continues to do this until you eat something. So despite what you may have heard it is perfectly acceptable to put off your morning Shakeology for a few hours to take advantage of this phenomenon.
